Leave a Gift in Your Will

Help us to continue our valuable work. No one wants to think about making a will and people have all sorts of reasons for not making one; lack of time, not sure they have "enough" to leave to make it worthwhile or simply just don't want to think about dying! But making a will is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your wishes are carried out.

A will is the only way to ensure you protect the rights of those you wish to benefit from your estate. When no will exists it can cause stress and upset to those you love, at a time when they need it least.

Making or updating your will needn't be difficult or expensive and it's important to consider who you wish to benefit from it, remembering charitable causes that are dear to you.

Leaving a gift in your will is a wonderful way to help continue the work Dr Kershaw’s does for people in our community. You could leave stocks and shares, artwork, old or foreign coins and notes, rare books, jewellery or any other goods that the Hospice could use to raise funds. Of course, you can also leave money to the Hospice.

We would always recommend that you consult a Solicitor who will give you professional advice and hold a copy of your will for safekeeping. Even if you think that your affairs are straightforward, it’s worth consulting a professional to ensure that your wishes are carried out as you would wish. A donation bequest will also minimise the amount of inheritance tax you will have to pay, as gifts to a charity are generally exempt from tax, and such a gift can bring the overall value of your estate within the existing Inheritance Tax band. This means that more of your estate will go where you want it to go.

It is also important to review your will regularly but particularly in light of any life-changing events as these could render a will invalid, these include:

  • A marriage or divorce
  • The birth of a child
  • A major change in financial circumstances
  • The death of a partner or other beneficiary
  • A change of mind

Simple changes can be made using a codicil, a separate document which must be witnessed and kept safely with your existing will. Once again, we would recommend using the services of a solicitor to have your will amended.
