Morecambe Bay Walk

Join us on Sunday 8th June for one of the most unique and scenic walks in England, with our 8-mile trek across the beautiful sands of Morecambe Bay!

The iconic Morecambe Bay Sands is a unique stretch of sand and sea that spans a staggering 10 miles along the Lancashire coast.

We will be guided by Michael Wilson, the official King’s Guide over Sands Trust, from Arnside to Grange-over-Sands, for approximately an 8-mile journey. The walk will commence at 4pm.

The family and group-friendly sponsored walk is ideal for walking groups, families, dog walkers and previous participants of our Hospice to Hospice Walk. Each fundraiser will receive a Dr Kershaw's T-shirt.

Entry fee

Entry is just £15 per adult, £10 per child, or a family ticket is £45 (2 adults, 2 children).

Start time:

The walk will start at roughly 4pm but this will be confirmed ahead of the event.

We advise supporters to park your vehicles at the end of the walk at Kent's Bank Station in Grange-over-Sands and get the train across to Arnside. Please be respectful when parking for the event.

What should I bring?

· Sun hat, sunglasses and sun cream - because sand, sun and sea can be a fierce combination

· Breathable lightweight clothing, waterproof layers and a few extra layers if you feel the cold but also to protect from the sun. If possible shorts or trousers that roll up

· Refreshments - sandwich, snacks, water and your personal medication

· A charged mobile phone

· A towel for when you have achieved this iconic walk in beautiful surroundings

Who is the walk suitable for?

First and foremost you should be able to walk up to 9 miles.

The walk is on varied terrain including sections of sand, shingle, pebbles, rock and salt marsh. It takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete, covering a distance of 6-9 miles depending on the route - which is confirmed on the day.

Parts of the walk may be challenging. Changeable weather and a varying terrain will be encountered.

Underfoot, Arnside to the shore includes sand, footpaths, lanes and marshland. The bulk of the crossing is flat sand often rippled and sometimes covered in water. Halfway across you will navigate the Kent River where you can expect an average depth of up to 2ft (60cm) for a distance of some 50m. The final leg of the walk is over marsh, this is a clear pathway but may sometimes be slippery.

Please ensure that all those under 18 taking part in the walk are supervised by an adult at all times.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, your dog is welcome to join us at £1 each which is payable to our Guide on the day. Don’t forget your poo bags!

2024's Morecambe Bay Walk

Many of our supporters had asked for an arranged walk, and so in 2024 we decided on this most historic walk led by the official King’s Guide.

It was an amazing first for Dr Kershaw's and an incredible day. Over 100 of our fabulous fundraisers took part and the King’s Guide and his fantastic Marshalls ensured the safety of over 500 walkers in total. Our supporters had a wonderful day, especially the furry four-legged ones!

2024 Walk Participant - "Thank you to everyone involved in organising the Morecambe Bay walk, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, such a fun day! We wore our tee shirts with pride."

The day raised over £11,000 to support patient care at Dr Kershaw's. We are truly grateful to each and every person (and dog) who took part!
