With Covid restrictions lifting further last month, we are pleased to announce that we have been able to welcome even more of their valued and dedicated volunteers back to the Hospice and have reintroduced their Pets as Therapy Volunteers back onto their In-Patient Unit to support patients and their family members.

Regular Dr Kershaw’s Fundraiser, Lorna Babington, 22, from Moorside, wanted to do something different this time round, to raise funds for the Hospice who cared for her dad, Chris, before he sadly died at age 49, when she was just 15.

In recognition of a lifetime of service and dedication to the Crown and the nation by his HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, The Mark Benevolent Fund, which is the charity arm of the Mark Degree of Freemasonry, invited every Mark Lodge in England and Wales to nominate a hospice within their Province to receive a donation of £1,000.

Following the announcement that Dr Kershaw’s Hospice was named as a finalist in the Nursing Times Awards - Nursing in the Community category, the Hospice has been shortlisted once more in the same category, for the work that we do in collaboration with The Christie NHS Foundation Trusts, in providing cancer treatments locally.

Dr Kershaw’s recently held our annual Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge, with 17 fundraisers coming together to raise funds for the Hospice. The 24 mile hiking challenge, took place on Saturday 17 July, one of the hottest days of the year so far

Gabriella Burke-Turner, aged 9, took to the hills at the end of May to conquer the heights of Pendle Hill to raise funds for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice who cared for her grandma before she sadly passed away earlier this year.

Joining Dr Kershaw’s in the middle of the pandemic, HR Advisor, Mandi Halton, decided to take on the Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) 874 mile challenge to raise funds for our Hospice, after completing her first fundraiser in 2020 by swapping Christmas cards for donations.

The team at Clarksfield business, Chunky Chicken on Lees Road are preparing to hike Mount Snowdon to raise vital funds for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. The local business who has fundraised for many other causes over the years, selected Dr Kershaw’s as they wanted to support local end-of-life and palliative care, after a youthworker who the team grew up with received Hospice care before he sadly died three years ago.

With Summer now in full swing, Booths Garden Centre on Turf Lane, Royton, contacted Dr Kershaw’s to provide a kind donation of bedding plants to further enhance the gardens at the front of the Hospice, which are maintained by a team of volunteer gardeners.

Ann Weeks and husband, Andy are keen walkers in their local town, Ely, Cambridgeshire. When the pandemic began last year, a visitor started to join them on their evening 3km walks, later to be known as Bob the cat.

Keen runner, Helen Rabbitt, 25, took part in many running events prior to Covid. With physical events on hold, Helen signed up to the Virtual Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise funds for Dr Kershaw’s where her mum, Rosie Rabbitt works as a Health Care Assistant.

48-year-old, Sally Maher set up her own community fundraising team before Christmas, initially collecting over 2,000 selection boxes. It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Dr Kevin Moore, a kind, dedicated man and much-loved friend and respected colleague to all at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. Dr Moore played an important part in developing the Hospice and its services, practicing for 26 years in a number of different roles and becoming Medical Director in 1994.
