Carol Walker’s mum, Rita Walker, 81, visited the Dr Kershaw’s Well-Being Centre, before receiving end-of-life care in her own home. Malcolm Darraugh was admitted to Dr Kershaw’s, on 7th December 2016, at just 44 years old. His two sons, Keir and Kaleb were 5 and 8 at that time and with Christmas coming up the Hospice staff did everything they could to make precious memories for Malcolm, his wife, Angela and their sons.

Joining Dr Kershaw’s in the middle of the pandemic, HR Advisor, Mandi Halton, decided to take on the Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) 874 mile challenge to raise funds for our Hospice, after completing her first fundraiser in 2020 by swapping Christmas cards for donations.

The team at Clarksfield business, Chunky Chicken on Lees Road are preparing to hike Mount Snowdon to raise vital funds for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. The local business who has fundraised for many other causes over the years, selected Dr Kershaw’s as they wanted to support local end-of-life and palliative care, after a youthworker who the team grew up with received Hospice care before he sadly died three years ago.

Laura Heywood, 27, from Melbourne, Australia has joined with four family members living in Greater Manchester to fundraise for Dr Kershaw’s who cared for Laura’s grandad, Alf Guilbert, before he sadly passed away in May.

Admitted for symptom control, 81-year-old, Brian Scott from Heyside was surprised when nurses at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice invited him and his wife Margaret, 78 to enjoy drinks and nibbles on the terrace of Brian’s room, one of the new en-suite single patient rooms in our recently opened In-Patient Unit.

With Summer now in full swing, Booths Garden Centre on Turf Lane, Royton, contacted Dr Kershaw’s to provide a kind donation of bedding plants to further enhance the gardens at the front of the Hospice, which are maintained by a team of volunteer gardeners.

When Erin Bennett’s mum, Hazel Reed was cared for at Dr Kershaw’s, back in 2018, the staff and volunteers did everything they could to make their experience of the Hospice a happy one, ensuring that they spent precious time together creating special memories for Erin of her mum, that will stay with her forever.

Ann Weeks and husband, Andy are keen walkers in their local town, Ely, Cambridgeshire. When the pandemic began last year, a visitor started to join them on their evening 3km walks, later to be known as Bob the cat.

With restrictions easing slightly, the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander was able to visit Dr Kershaw’s to present a £2,000 cheque from the Mayoral Appeal Fund at the front of the Hospice.

Keen runner, Helen Rabbitt, 25, took part in many running events prior to Covid. With physical events on hold, Helen signed up to the Virtual Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise funds for Dr Kershaw’s where her mum, Rosie Rabbitt works as a Health Care Assistant.

48-year-old, Sally Maher set up her own community fundraising team before Christmas, initially collecting over 2,000 selection boxes. For Easter, Sally and her team set to work again and collected funds for, bought, and distributed 1,725 Easter eggs for charities and other good causes across the community.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Dr Kevin Moore, a kind, dedicated man and much-loved friend and respected colleague to all at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. Dr Moore played an important part in developing the Hospice and its services, practicing for 26 years in a number of different roles and becoming Medical Director in 1994.
