Admitted for symptom control, 81-year-old, Brian Scott from Heyside was surprised when nurses at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice invited him and his wife Margaret, 78 to enjoy drinks and nibbles on the terrace of Brian’s room, one of the new en-suite single patient rooms in our recently opened In-Patient Unit.
The happy couple have been together since Margaret left school aged just 15, and have been married for 58 years, with two children and five grandchildren. Brian said: “The Hospice staff have been absolutely brilliant, they can’t do enough for you. What a nice surprise the wine and nibbles were, I even had a foot massage yesterday too! The staff are so friendly and the new building is absolutely wonderful!”
Margaret and Brian who had previous knowledge of the Hospice from being signed up as Lottery Members, used to spend their favourite times together dancing and ice skating at the Carlton in Rochdale. Margaret said: “Everyone at the Hospice has been so fantastic, having the patio area outside Brian’s room is so lovely. With holidays on hold, I wouldn’t mind a two-week stay at the Hospice myself sometime in August maybe?”
Adele Doherty, Director of Clinical Services added: “Little touches to enhance a patients time at the Hospice is key for us. We often use donations that we receive from the public to help us to create precious experiences and memories for patients and their families.”
