In 2020, Blackshaw Lane Primary School pupil, Poppy Ward, aged 6, gave up chocolate for Lent to raise funds for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice. This year, fantastic junior fundraiser, Poppy, who was inspired by the exploits of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, created her very own event – Poppy’s Garden Parade.
Sporting different outfits for each of the 46 days of Lent, Poppy completed a fantastic 662 laps of her garden, equating to over 13 miles, just more than a half marathon to raise an amazing £550 for the Hospice. Living in Royton, Poppy is familiar with Dr Kershaw’s through fundraising at her school and her family have always supported the local Hospice which has cared for their loved ones in the past.
Proud mum, Amber-Jayne Ward has been amazed at her daughter’s passion and creativity in wanting to raise funds for her local Hospice, she said: “Everyday come rain or shine Poppy has dressed up in a different fancy dress outfit and done her garden laps, she’s ran, walked, skipped, hopped, done twirls and we’ve even all joined her as a marching band.”
