Gail Robertshaw, our Catering Manager has been working at the Hospice for over 20 years and alongside her team works diligently to support each patient on the In-Patient Unit to find the right food for their specific illness.
Gail explains: “When someone is poorly and hasn’t eaten for a while, it can be a challenge to find the right food for them to want to eat, but we work with each patient to encourage and support them to get them back to eating. It was a big challenge to do this at the beginning of the pandemic when we had to completely stop patient contact though. It’s such a reward to see patients get back to eating and to support them to find the right foods for their illness. We have patients who can’t eat solid food and have to have puréed diets, this doesn’t have to just automatically be soup, we can get anything they want to eat to the right consistency so they can enjoy their meals.
Primarily we feed our patients, tailoring our meals to their special requirements, but it’s important to also be there for each family. Patients can often worry about their family members not eating and it’s a comfort to them when we can support by offering meals, it takes away the worry and the burden of having to go home to eat and means more time can be spent with their loved one in the Hospice.”
