Caring Hands Health Care Assistant Diane Atkins

Hospice worker, Diane Atkins, started her journey working at Dr Kershaw’s after her husband, Mark was cared for by the Hospice Team at just aged 57 back in 2016. After Mark sadly passed away, Diane struggled to continue with her previous job, and when she saw a job advertised at the Hospice in 2020 as part of the community team – Caring Hands she applied and was thrilled to get the role, where she has been able to give patients and families the same care and respect that her husband had when he was at the Hospice.

Caring Hands Health Care Assistant, Diane explained: “Mark was cared for in the In-Patient Unit for over two weeks, the team managed to get his pain under control and the Hospice supported us to bring him home to spend his time with family. When I saw the job at Dr Kershaw’s I knew it was meant to be, Caring Hands wasn’t around when Mark was poorly but would have made such a difference. Every single day in my role is rewarding, knowing that you’ve helped people and made their day better, we talk to patients and their families about everyday things, and don’t focus our conversations on their illnesses, and many patients look forward to our visits. Every day families and the entire community is so appreciative of our work, we receive some lovely cards and letters. It can be a tough role because you are going into people’s homes, and always trying to be positive in tough situations. We do everything we can to provide the care that our patients deserve to the best of our abilities.”
