The Mayor of Oldham Officially Opens The Furniture Hub, Dr Kershaw’s New Furniture Store

5 Nov 2021

The Hospice’s new furniture store is now open for the community to purchase high quality new and used furniture to support patient care at Dr Kershaw’s.

Dr Kershaw’s brand new furniture store, The Furniture Hub is now open, launched officially by The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jenny Harrison at the launch event, which took place on Thursday 4th November.

With three existing Hospice shops in the borough, our new retail presence is located right in the heart of the community, in Neo House, Shaw Road, and is just five minutes away from Dr Kershaw’s.

The new store will support the Hospice to raise funds for patient care in Oldham, offering high quality new and used furniture ranging from small coffee tables to three piece suites, all at affordable prices. Customers can come in and browse whilst treating themselves to a sit down with a hot drink and cake too in a new coffee area. There is also an option for customers to have their furniture delivered from the new store at a small cost to local destinations.

Joanne Sloan, The Chief Executive at Dr Kershaw's said: “It’s an exciting day, we are thrilled to open our new furniture store, which offers wonderful furniture at practical prices. The pandemic has had a devastating effect on the income that we bring into our Hospice, and The Furniture Hub is a fantastic opportunity for us, every penny will be ploughed back into patient services, supporting patients and their loved ones at the most difficult of times.”

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jenny Harrison cut the red ribbon at the launch event to officially open The Furniture Hub and welcome the community into the store for the first time. The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jenny Harrison said: “I have very much been looking forward to today, it gives me enormous pride and pleasure to open the store. The Furniture Hub fulfils so many functions, I am very impressed with how modern and professional the store is, a great deal of thought and work has gone into making it feel like you are walking round an actual furniture store. Congratulations to everyone who has been involved, both staff and volunteers from the Hospice, I wish you every success with The Furniture Hub in the coming months.”

The Mayor’s Consort, Councillor Shaid Mushtaq added: “The Furniture Hub is a great space, it feels very welcoming and offers so many opportunities for the community, including for those who aren’t necessarily in a position to purchase brand new furniture, there are so many fantastic furniture options available at affordable prices.”

Dave Arnold, Royton North Councillor was also in attendance at the launch, he said: “What a wonderful facility, it has far exceeded my expectations, I will certainly be back!”

Dr Kershaw’s are also collecting furniture to sell in our newly launched store so if you are thinking about buying new furniture for your house and want your old furniture to go to a good home then please do get in touch with the Hospice, who can arrange collection and will sell the furniture to generate much needed funds to support patient care. You can also drop off your furniture direct to the store, and the Hospice’s staff and volunteers will be happy to help you unload your items. To find out more or to arrange collection of your furniture please visit The Furniture Hub, or contact the Hospice on 0161 624 2727.

The store will also play host to a Knitting Club for volunteers, enabling new skills to be learnt, as well as restoration classes to bring unloved items back to life. More activities for volunteers to sign up to at The Furniture Hub will be announced soon.

To find out more about The Furniture Hub visit in-store (opening hours- Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm) or read more here.

The Hospice’s new furniture store is being supported by a range of volunteers already, but is still looking for support from Retail Sorters and Showroom Assistants. If you know someone who might be interested, please ask them to contact the Hospice’s Volunteering Team on 0161 624 2727 or email Nikki.Butterworth@drkh.org.uk
