Malcolm Darraugh was admitted to Dr Kershaw’s, on 7th December 2016, at just 44 years old. His two sons, Keir and Kaleb were 5 and 8 at that time and with Christmas coming up the Hospice staff did everything they could to make precious memories for Malcolm, his wife, Angela and their sons.

Angela explains: “From the day Malc was admitted to Dr Kershaw’s, the staff showed nothing but kindness and empathy. They arranged for us to stay so we were able to spend as much time as possible together and with Christmas getting closer, they decorated the room with a Christmas tree and a big Santa teddy for the boys to play with. They provided a memory box and books on how to help children cope with loss and grief, brought them sweets and selection boxes and even arranged teepees for them to play in.

On the day Malcolm died, the Hospice staff arranged an early Christmas for us as a family. A buffet was provided, Santa came with gifts and sweets and I was able to spend time alone with Malcolm.

The care Malcolm received was second to none, they made him as comfortable as possible, and the staff were more like family to us. Nothing was too much trouble and we will be forever grateful. After Malcolm died, I started donating £20 a month to help Dr Kershaw’s to support more patients and their families, as we were supported.”
