Our Inpatient Unit
Our new state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit (IPU) opened in 2021, and can accommodate 12 patients. The facility includes eight single and two twin rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities, a smart TV, recliner chair and storage unit along with double doors looking out and accessible to the garden. The inpatient family lounge features sofas and dining facilities and is available for patients to spend time with their families and friends outside their rooms.
Our patient rooms have stunning views of the newly landscaped gardens with seating areas and walkways for patients and their families to spend time in.
Our Medical and Nursing Team
On the Inpatient Unit, our dedicated team provide end-of-life care and can also assist with symptom management. The medical and nursing staff are experienced in palliative medicine and are supported by a range of other hospice professionals, which provides a seamless service for patients across hospital, community and hospice boundaries. Our staff link very closely with specialist nurses in hospitals and the community, allied health professionals, social workers, spiritual leaders and bereavement support workers. This multi-disciplinary approach allows the palliative care team to address the physical, emotional, spiritual and social concerns that arise with advanced illness.
Our Patients
Following admission, patients are assessed and individual care plans are developed through discussion with the patient, their relatives and carers. During the course of the patient's stay at the Hospice this plan of care is regularly assessed and altered in response to the patient’s individual needs.
Patient Discharge
Discharge planning meetings are held for all patients from the Oldham borough prior to their discharge. These meetings are attended by the relevant health care professionals together with the patient and their relatives or carers. This means that an appropriate care package can be put into place prior to the patient's discharge to home or to an alternative place of care. This ensures the discharge is safe and well supported.
Comprehensive channels of communication are in place to ensure a seamless service between hospital, hospice and community.
Covid-19 Hospice Current Precautions
On entering Dr Kershaw’s Hospice all staff, volunteers, and visitors are required to:
· Use the alcohol hand gels provided at reception on arrival and exit, and those located throughout the Hospice.
· When entering the Inpatient Unit wash their hands thoroughly for 20 seconds using soap and water.
· The use of fluid resistant face masks (FRFM) is no longer required, however if there is a suspected or confirmed
case and/or outbreak the guidance will revert back to the use of FRFM to control the risk of further spread and
protect patients, staff, visitors and volunteers. The Director of Clinical Services will update any changes as
required.
How to be Referred?
If you feel that you or a family member is in need of the inpatient service the Hospice provides, you must speak to your or their GP, hospital consultant, community nurse, Macmillan nurse, hospital or community associated health professional, as all referrals must be made through one of these sources
